Boy Scouts of America Buckskin Council – Charleston, West Virginia

The Boy Scouts Buckskin Council has a long and rich history led by an experienced, well networked board of directors. To meet their mission, they set out to double the size of the facility and double the size of their outreach. They knew they needed a skilled team and needed PrayWorks at the helm.

Steeped in a scouting tradition, the Wehlre family generously supported this project and The Bernard Wehrle, Sr. building bears the family’s name. “My personal involvement in this project was to ensure our investment was cost effective,” explained Trustee Steve Wehrle. He continued, “As a first step we hired PrayWorks to work with all parties for project cost savings and on time delivery. David has broad experience and knowledge. His professionalism, quality of work and ability to manage everyone involved was outstanding.”

Steve appreciated the influence of the Lean Construction methodologies and believed it was exceptional for delivering on time and on budget. “The aggressive six month timeline for completion was met,” he explained, “which is most unusual for a complex construction project.”

“The cost savings from his work were significant and he more than paid for himself. We could not have done it without Dave Pray!” – Steve Wehrle

The Buckskin Council staff was equally appreciative of the PrayWorks partnership. “The Wehrle family decided to bring Dave Pray on board to represent us, and it was an absolutely great idea,” reported Jeff Purdy, the Buckskin Council Scout Executive. “He let everyone know their roles and responsibility and kept all feet to the fire.”

Jeff appreciated Pray’s ability to help him decipher what was important to him and where he needed to focus. “Many, many times he was our champion and his vast experience enabled him to advocate for us when we would not have known we needed it,” Jeff remarked.  “We started on time, we ended on time and we finished under budget, and Pray made my life simple. It was a very positive experience!”

Mark Grigsby, president of Pray Construction Company who worked for Dave Pray for years appreciated his intensity and commitment to his craft.  “Having known Dave Pray for decades prior to working for him as an owner’s rep, I knew he would push the entire team hard to work for our customer, which he did,” he explained. “He introduced us to Lean Construction’s Pulled Planning process,” he continued. “It was a significant benefit to our superintendent and project manager for that project and for their work going forward.”

Having PrayWorks involved kept all parties on task. Mark recalls, “Dave’s 6:00 AM daily calls were incredibly helpful to the entire team and the project. We appreciate that Dave keeps everyone in tune and on the same page from start to finish.”

“The process can be uncomfortable and include some healthy tension, but it is effective and makes all parties perform at their best.” – Mark Grigsby

Pat Graney, a supporter of this project and many, many others in West Virginia summed up Dave’s work on the Buckskin Council. Pat stated, “I have worked with Dave Pray for decades and he continues to integrate the best practices in his field, making him a terrific advocate for the owner of both private sector or non-profit projects. Engaging PrayWorks early in the conceptual phase of a project is just a smart business practice.”
